For the upcoming 13th World Oceans Day and 14th National Ocean Awareness Day, the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association and NetEase Games have joined forces to launch their first collaborative event to raise awareness of marine conservation and promote National Ocean Awareness Day. The collaboration will include a series of activities to advocate the ever-important global marine conservation policy and bring the public to the forefront of the conservation effort. The event was divided into four parts: Marine Science and Technology Exhibition, "Run, Ocean Guardians" Beach Cleanup Project," "Love for the Blue Morning Run," and Ocean Knowledge Trivia.
On June 8th, the event kicks off with "Run, Ocean Guardians" at Haikou Station, with 150 participants gathered at Haikou Beach and collected 24.5kg of garbage in 30 minutes. At 8:15 in the morning, volunteers began the "Love for the Blue Morning Run," setting off from the West Coast Park viewing platform and arriving at the event venue on Haikou Beach.
The World Oceans Day event started with an opening ceremony hosted by Wang Shiguang, Deputy Director of the Hainan Provincial Natural Resources and Planning Bureau. The Deputy Director pointed out that Hainan Province is the largest province in the country, with a sea area of 2 million square kilometers and a coastline of 136.23 kilometers. "Embrace, Protect, and Be Thankful for the Ocean" is an important responsibility for all citizens of Haikou.
In the trivia activity, the audience participated with great enthusiasm, winning prizes and learning about the ocean. At the same time, 20 enterprises were invited to showcase their accomplishments in the Haikou Ocean Conservation Initiative Project during the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan of China.
During the "Run, Ocean Guardians" activity, volunteers gathered on the beach to pick up trash and demonstrate their commitment to marine conservation. Ms. Wu, one of the volunteers, explained the importance of the event, "Plastic waste is hazardous to the ocean ecosystem. Cleaning it up protects our environment and the creatures that inhabit it and keeps our beaches safe for our children. It's important to show our kids the importance of ocean conservation from a young age." The event proved successful in raising awareness of ocean conservation and protecting the shoreline from pollution. It was a meaningful way to mark World Oceans Day and celebrate the beauty and importance of our oceans.
Under the guidance of the Hainan Provincial Ecological Environment Protection Education and Training Center and the Haikou City Affairs Center, Netease Games' Sky: Children of the Light and the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association joined hands with Hainan University Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Ocean College of Hainan University to host an ocean protection forum at the Hainan University's International Academic Exchange Center. He Weilong, Director of the Hainan Provincial Ecological Environment Protection Education and Training Center, Chen Hongwen, Section Chief of Marine Environment Protection of the Haikou City Ecological Environment Bureau, Zhou Weihua, Vice President of the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association, Zhou Zhi, Vice President of the Ocean College of Hainan University, Xu Qiang, Director of the Marine Science Department of Hainan University, Wang Gexia, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Lu Shuguo, a researcher from the Hainan Environmental Science Academy attended the forum, and the topics of the keynote speeches included "Coral Ecosystem Under Environmental Threats," "Our Responsibility to Marine Environment Protection," "The Opportunities and Challenges of Biodegradable Plastics in the Plastic Ban Age," and "Creating Long-term Solution to Marine Ecological Environment Protection."
At the event, two seminars titled "Plastic-Free Ocean - Fishermen Taking Matters Into Their Own Hands" and "The Power of NGOs in Protecting Marine Biodiversity" bring together local fishermen, business representatives, non-governmental organizations, and youth delegates to share their ideas and stories on marine biodiversity protection. They introduced their efforts to protect the environment, including policy changes, cleaning and recycling of ocean debris, collecting and recycling plastics, and new ideas for co-existing with the ocean. At the forum, Sky: Children of the Light player representatives shared their thoughts on protecting nature and calling on the younger generation to be more responsible and eco-friendly with their lifestyles. After the forum, Hainan University students held various booths and attracted onlookers to participate in marine science trivia and experience what's it like to be a part of the conservation effort. The forum was also broadcast live on Yangshipin and Xinhua Cloud.
For 2021, World Oceans Day will focus on "Protecting Marine Ecosystems: Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans and Nature." This message echoes Sky: Children of the Light's mission to foster a harmonious and respectful relationship with nature. The game further encourages deeper thought on the topics of humanity and nature. Through this event, the public can be made aware of the importance and urgency of marine conservation and feel encouraged to take part in ocean protection. Together with Sky: Children of the Light, let's protect the ocean and welcome a brighter future on World Oceans Day.
